Edge Hockey Philosophy

Hockey Schools

Edge Hockey schools are designed to maximize the learning experience of each participant. Hockey skills, conditioning and having fun are only a few of the areas that Edge Hockey focuses on when coaching your child. The Edge Hockey staff wants to see your child leave each day with a smile on their face and with more hockey knowledge in their pocket!

Edge Hockey has a strong commitment to the community and to youth hockey. This is why Edge Hockey continues to sponsor youth hockey long after the summer schools have finished. We contribute to youth hockey tournaments throughout the winter months with the goal of helping as many children as possible play this great game.

Conditioning Programs

The Edge Hockey philosophy of the conditioning programs is simple: give your game an edge, and take you to the next level. Edge Hockey will make you quicker, faster, stronger and more agile. This is the same program the pros are using, modified for a players age and individualized to your child's needs.

Edge Hockey History

Edge Hockey began in 1993 with the first Annual Theoren Fleury Hockey School in Calgary, AB. By 1995 Edge Hockey had increased its operation, to include running 4 additional Hockey School:

Trevor Kidd
Calgary Flames
Calgary, AB

Greg Johnson
Detroit Red Wings

Trent Yawney

Saskatoon, SK

Kelly Buchberger
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton, AB

In 1998, Theoren Fleury added an additional week in his home town Russell, MB and Trevor Kidd added a week in Winnipeg, MB.

In 1999 Ryan Smyth (Edmonton Oilers) joined the Edge Hockey School with his school in Moose Jaw, SK followed by Craig Simpson (Edmonton Oilers) in Edmonton, AB in 2000.

Rob (Anaheim Mighty Ducks) and Scott (New Jersey Devils) Niedermayer joined a year later in 2001 with their school in Cranbrook, BC.

2004 saw the introduction of the Brad Werenka (Calgary Flames) school in Calgary, AB as well as the 1st ever Edge Female Hockey Schools in Calgary, AB and Russell, MB.

In 2005, the Edge Goalie School in Russell, MB was added, and our first school in the USA. Austin, TX played host to the Edge Hockey School with our great staff making the trip south to spread the knowledge of this great game.

Further in 2005 the Edge Hockey School also added an Elite program in Cranbrook, BC and Russell, MB that was open to top level Bantam, Midget players & Goalies.

2006 was a huge year for Edge Hockey in many aspects.

Edge Hockey took over both it's Edmonton and Calgary Schools under the Edge Hockey School label. We also added a new School in Winnipeg, MB hosted by the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League who are the affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. Edge Hockey added both a regular program and an Elite program in Winnipeg.

Due to years of training players from minor hockey to the pros and with two great partnerships, Edge Hockey launched Edge Conditioning.

In Calgary, AB Edge Conditioning started it's Rich Hesketh Conditioning Camps (now Edge Conditioning). Rich has been the strength and conditioning coach of the Calgary Flames for the past 10+ years. The program is an off ice training program that runs from the begin of June till the end of August. This is the same program that has taken many of the great Flame players to the top of their game including Jarome Iginla. In Cranbrook, BC Edge Conditioning in a partnership with Jason Jaffray (Vancouver Canucks) started a 3 week on-in training program. Jason is one of the hardest workers in any league and just before the start of each season he gets 22 motivated players ready for tryouts.

Edge Hockey saw growth again in 2007, making the Edge Goalie School available at all our locations. The goalies now had their own instructors and specialized program.

Calgary Edge Hockey School also moved to it's new home in the Country Hills area of Calgary. Cardel Place, a multi functional facility which had everything Edge needed under one roof. The school was also expanded with the Elite program.

In 2008 Edge added a second week of hockey school in Cranbrook, BC hosted by the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club. This will be a great give back to the city of Cranbrook by the ICE.

2009 Edge added some amazing headliners to already established schools. Edmonton Oiler Jason Strudwick will be the headliner for our Edmonton school which will now be know as the Jason Strudwick Hockey Schoool.

Craig Weller of the Minnesota Wild who has attend the past two Calgary Edge Hockey Schools as a guest instructor will now be the headliner of that school. The Craig Weller Hockey School will feature Craig on the ice daily with the participants.
